I arrived for the sound check at an empty Kentish Town Forum. Started to feel very sentimental as one by one the Juice Crew tested their mics monitors and gave a lucky few of us a taste of what was about to go down.
DJ 279 kicked off on the wheels of steel with straight up golden-era hip-hop to get people in the mood. Microphone duties started with support from Rodney P & Bionic going in on some classic London Posse tunes. Supernatural mc spitting freestyles with interacts with the crowd.
The Juice crew is made of some of the GOAT hip-hop artists . Especially good to see them perform Symphony together as well as their individual hits ‘live on stage’.
After the show I managed to make the meet & greet. I thanked all the artists for what was a very memorable show and managed to get both the Juice Crew heads print and Golden Era Stamps print signed by all the artists.

Pe 30th birthday

Arrived at ChipShop early, I hadn’t managed to reach this place before.
Met with the owner who was very excited to be hosting the Public Enemy’s 30th birthday party in London. Word had been getting around about who was going to be in attendance. The Chipshop is a small venue (actually a restaurant and bar) with a big personality. Whilst looking up at the wall checking out the artwork and listening to MF Doom Accordion, I ate the best jerk lamb chops and sweet potato chips! This was just the fuel required for what was going to be another huge night.
Met a few heads from the previous night and people I know who helping to put this night together and at this stage I’m starting to realise that things are about to get serious.
I loved it as artists randomly entered the Chipshop, whichever MC was on the mic would shout ‘Shante’s in the house’ this happened a few times and everyone’s heads would turn before the artist would squeeze past to get to the back of the venue. Basically you were within a 5 meter radius of either B-Real, Chuck D, DJ Lord, Tom Morello, Rodney P, Skinnyman, Logic, curoc/son of noise iamkofi. It was fucking ridiculous. Teenage me would never have believed it was happening.

We were treated with top performances by all the artists who seemed to be having the most fun, taking it in turns to get on the mic at a venue that was half OG hip-hop fans and half some of the finest hip-hop artists of a generation. Yes! In a chipshop!

I’d only recently been listening to RTJ but was well into Killer Mike who I’d seen perform in Brighton a few years ago. Basically I was hooked listening to RTJ3 and the DJ Shadow track, Nobody Speak. The guys are both dope MC’s whom seem to be having a whole lot of fun on some incredibly well produced tracks.
RTJ were being supported by Danny Brown who I hadn’t really heard before. And for whatever reason I couldn’t get into him, despite being around plenty of people that did. TBH I really struggled hearing what he was saying, he raps with a high pitch which made it difficult. I’ll try give him a listen again soon from the safety of an iPod
After Danny Brown came the main event, Killer Mike and El-P, Run The Jewels. All i can say after 3 albums they have a dope collection of tunes, all of which make an excellent live show. Nobody Speak, and Live at the Garden and more… before they performed their final song, Killer Mike spoke some open and honest words about our time on the planet and losing loved ones before they hit the crowd with ‘Down’.
Raced back to Brighton arriving at nearly 2am only to not be able to sleep after the most epic weekend ever.
Never have I been more in love with hip-hop. OK, maybe when i was in my teens. But I’m jubilant and ecstatic that hip-hop is still relevant 40 years after its birth… hip-hop is alive, kicking and punching.
